The Thirteen Ways We Turned Darryl Datson into a Monster (Kurt Fawver)
**WINNER - 2024 Shirley Jackson Awards, Novelette**
The Thirteen Ways We Turned Darryl Datson into a Monster by Kurt Fawver, with art and cover design by Mikio Murakami / Silent Q Design.
A very dark story -- graphic bullying, body-shaming, and suicide are all on vivid display here, consider that a content warning.
A very personal story for Kurt. (His story notes at the end go into more detail.) It really knocked me for a loop when I read it, and I think it is especially likely to resonate with anyone who suffered persecution as an other in school. It's a fairly bleak ride, phantasmal and not a little bit chilling in true Fawver fashion.
72 pages. Limited edition of 150 copies.
Praise for Kurt's collection We Are Happy, We Are Doomed (Grimscribe Press, 2021)
“Delightfully acerbic, poetically strange, We are Happy, We are Doomed builds upon bedrock weird fiction influences to rise as its own dark island. If we're talking about Thomas Ligotti and Michael Cisco, we need to be talking about Kurt Fawver.”
— Laird Barron, author of Not a Speck of Light
“Kurt Fawver traffics in dark allegories, deeply strange fables, and the boldly outré. He’s a true original, a treasure, and We are Happy, We are Doomed is a showcase for some of his finest work to date.”
— Matthew M. Bartlett, author of Gateways to Abomination
